What is social emotional learning?
Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children (and adults!) learn to understand and manage emotions, express empathy, set positive goals, create and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Promoting social emotional learning creates and welcoming and equitable learning space, resulting in increased academic achievement and improved behavior. |
Team Building
Team building involves activities completed as a group, designed to intentionally challenge students causing them to work more effectively as a team. In team builders, students must collaborate and cooperate with one another to succeed. These activities target specific areas of social emotional learning including communication, stress management, solving problems, and teamwork.

Collaborative Work
I integrate collaboration into all of my lessons regardless of content or subject. This provides students with the important opportunity to practice their communication skills, as well as to expand their thinking through others' ideas. Collaboration can be as quick as a turn and talk or be utilized for longer term activities such as projects or investigations.
Collaboration engages students in many social emotional learning skills such as communication, teamwork, social engagement, and relationship-building. Collaborative learning can be extended in the form of a discussion to include additional SEL themes of perspective taking, empathy, and appreciating diversity. |
